Description
7 The Wharf is a house built in 1794, with some alterations made in the early 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a hipped graduated slate roof, along with brick side wall and ridge stacks, and a stepped eaves band. The building has two storeys and five bays.
The central entrance has a doorcase that includes an early 20th-century glazed door and a divided, coloured glass overlight, set beneath a wedge lintel inscribed with the year '1794'. Above the entrance, there is a bracketed stone porch roof with a wavy head. On either side of the entrance are canted bay windows that have glazing bar sashes and low parapets above them.
On the upper level, there are five glazing bar sash windows set beneath rusticated wedge lintels, which have slightly arched lower edges next to raised keystones. The central sash window is narrower and features a wavy topped lintel. Similar windows are present on the south gable wall. The building is reputed to have served as the offices for the canal basin in the early 19th century.
