Description

Number 2 Store is a salt warehouse that has been converted into corn merchants. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone minor alterations since then. The building is constructed of red brick, partly rendered, and features brick and stone dressings, topped with a hipped slate roof that has a sawtooth eaves band.

The structure has a square plan and consists of two storeys with six bays. The east elevation features a slightly off-centre semi-circular headed doorcase with stone impost blocks and a brick arch, which holds modern doors. High on the south side, there are two semi-circular windows with fan-like glazing, while three similar windows are located to the north side of the door, with six more above them. The street elevation includes a semi-circular headed doorcase flanked by three semi-circular windows to the east and one similar window to the west, which has an inserted glazing bar sash beneath a wedge stone lintel. Above this, there are five semi-circular windows and a depressed segmental arch over the doorcase.

On the canal elevation, similar architectural elements are arranged differently, featuring two arches at the centre on both the ground and first floors, flanked by semi-circular windows. Inside, the building boasts large king post roof trusses with side braces. This warehouse is part of a group of late 18th and early 19th-century industrial buildings that were constructed shortly after the completion of the Trent and Mersey Canal, during a time when Shardlow was a bustling inland port.
