Description
No. 21, Dobson's Boatyard, is a canal warehouse building that has been converted into small business premises. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations over time. The structure is built of red brick and features a slate roof with a stepped eaves band. It is a single-storey building with six bays.
The north elevation includes two wide central doorways with segment-headed arches, which have glazed doors, and these are flanked by pairs of segment-headed fixed small pane windows. The west gable wall has similar windows on either side of a large opening with rendered jambs and a timber lintel, which has been filled in with a large window. Above this is a segment-headed louvred opening. On the canal side gable wall, there is a central segment-headed opening that has been filled with a glazed door and window, with blocked segment-headed windows on either side.
Inside, the building features large queen post trusses that support double purlins. This warehouse is part of a group of industrial buildings that were constructed after the completion of the Trent and Mersey Canal, during a time when Shardlow was a bustling port.
