Description
Two and four Canal Bank are a pair of early 19th-century cottages, originally three, located on the canal bank in the parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne. The cottages are built of painted brick with plain tile roofs, featuring brick ridge stacks to each cottage and a brick gable stack to the north of the southern cottage. They have dentilled eaves bands along the canal-facing elevation, and No. 2 also has a sawtooth band along the street elevation.
No. 2 is three stories and two stories plus attics with three bays, while No. 4, attached to the south, is a single bay and two stories. No. 4 has a 2-light horizontal sliding glazing bar sash window and a plank door facing the street, and a wide, segment-headed plank door with a small 20th-century 2-light casement, and a similar window above, on the canal elevation. The street elevation of No. 4 is irregular, featuring a recessed two-story bay to the north and a single-story, two-bay section to the south. The northern bay contains a segment-headed panelled door to the north and a fixed pane segment-headed window to the south, with a lean-to beyond. Above the door is a fire insurance plaque and a 2-light horizontal sliding glazing bar sash window. The southern bays have a panelled door to the north and a small casement window to the south, with a 3-light horizontal sliding glazing bar sash window beyond. The canal elevation displays a mixture of original and inserted segment-headed windows.
