Description

The stable block to Foston Hall, now serving as an administrative building for HM Detention Centre, was built in 1905 in the Jacobean style. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof topped with a central clock turret and a bell cupola with a weather vane. The building has two ridge stacks with triple polygonal shafts and is single storey, arranged around a square courtyard.

The east elevation is symmetrical and consists of nine bays. It has a central ashlar carriage entrance that is framed by an open pedimented gable, which displays the coat of arms and the date 1905. This entrance is flanked by Tuscan columns and a frieze adorned with triglyphs and lozenges. On either side of the entrance, there are three bays with cross windows, and above these are three hipped roof dormers. The projecting end bays feature shaped gables, a three-light mullioned and transomed window, and a four-light window above. Arrow slits are present in the gables.

Inside the courtyard, the elevations are marked by cross windows and doorways topped with steep pediments. There are also louvred ventilation lanterns and upper doorways equipped with hoists. Some later fenestration is evident. The ranges extend halfway along the fourth side of the courtyard and are connected by a wall. In the northeast corner, there is a polygonal stair tower.
