Description

The stable range, built in 1903 in Neo-Georgian style, is located 40 metres north-east of Michaelstow Hall (Chafford School). It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with limestone dressings and has a slate and lead roof. The central block is aligned northwest-southeast, facing southeast, and features two storeys with attics and two stacks on the right pitch of the roof. Each side of the central block has a one-storey wing with attics.

The southeast elevation includes spur walls that connect to the wings, enclosing a stable yard. On the first floor of the central block, there are four sashes with 12 lights and flat arches made of rubbed brick. In the attic, there is one sash with 12 lights and a semi-circular head, also with an arch of rubbed brick. A full-width recessed entry features two Tuscan columns and a dentilled entablature, with three carriage doors, two plain boarded doors, and a halved door into each stable wing. The eaves are dentilled and moulded, and there is a bell at the apex of the gable.

A square clock turret with a leaded base, attached corner columns, a moulded cornice, a copper dome, and an iron weathervane is present. The two stacks are linked by an arched flue and moulded cornice. Each wing has one casement window with eight lights, one halved door, a square louvre with a copper dome, and a hipped roof. Cast iron rainwater goods are installed. Each hip features a half-glazed loading door and hoist with a moulded pediment. The northwest (rear) elevation has eight sashes with 12 lights and flat arches of rubbed brick, along with moulded eaves at the gable. All sashes, both front and back, have ovolo-moulded glazing bars. The only external alteration is a bunker at the rear made of Fletton bricks.
