Description
This is a large stable range, dating from the early 18th century, although it may incorporate elements from a 17th-century building. It is constructed of rubble stone with a central section of ashlar block, and has a stone-tiled roof with coped gables featuring moulded coping and finials.
The formal east front has a pedimented centrepiece in ashlar, with three 12-pane windows on the upper storey and three segmental arched coach entrances with keystones below. Flanking wings extend to either side; each has two widely-spaced, 2-light recessed ovolo-moulded windows on the first floor, and on the ground floor, an arched doorway with imposts and a keystone, a 3-light window in a moulded architrave, and a door within a heavy Gibbs surround with a flat cornice, topped by a similar 3-light window. A louvre turret rises from the ridge of the roof.
The rear elevation is irregular, with a central wallface stack flanked by a 2-light recessed ovolo-moulded window on the upper floor. To the left, there is a matching ground-floor window, a large keyed oval window above, an eaves dormer with 20th-century casements, and another 20th-century casement on the first floor. To the right, there are outside steps leading to an upper door and a keyed oval window at the right end of the first floor.
