Description

Owl Cottage, along with numbers 14, 15, and 17 The Street, comprises a group of three cottages, originally four, dating from the early to mid-17th century, with an 18th-century addition. The cottages are timber-framed and have been refronted with rendered brickwork, topped by a tiled roof with brick chimney stacks, rebuilt on the exterior. Numbers 15 and Owl Cottage are one storey high with attics, and feature three bays, three gabled dormers, and 20th-century casement windows. Owl Cottage includes a cambered doorcase and a sawtooth eaves cornice. Number 14 has a projecting gable and a horned sash window. The interior of the section originally number 16 (now part of Owl Cottage) retains an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, stop-chamfered spine beams, and an end wall with unusual serpentine bracing, similar to examples found in nearby Harwich. This row of cottages contributes significantly to the architectural character of the village, and the 17th-century cottages contain interesting serpentine bracing within the timber frame.
