Description

RAMSEY AND PARKESTON WIX ROAD TM 23 SW (north-west side) 2/70 Wash Cottage

  • II

House. Early C17, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roof thatched. 3 bays facing NE with stack behind axis of middle bay, forming a lobby-entrance. C20 single-storey lean-to extension along full length of rear, roofed with red clay tiles. One storey with attics. 2 C20 casements, and 3 more in eyebrow dormers. C20 door at front of tiled gabled porch. Jowled posts. Straight tension braces trenched inside close studding. Chamfered axial beams, both of re-used oak. Plain joists of horizontal section, supported on pegged clamps. Clasped purlin roof with straight wind braces to purlins, upper part ceiled. 2 large wood-burning hearths, the right hearth reduced in width. Original newel stair in front of stack. Exceptionally unaltered. An inlet of the sea formerly extended to within a short distance of this house; the name probably derives from a shallow crossing of the river just above tidal reach.
