Description
Wash Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. The house has three bays facing northeast, with a stack positioned behind the middle bay, creating a lobby-entrance. A single-storey lean-to extension, added in the 20th century, runs the full length of the rear and is roofed with red clay tiles. The cottage is one storey with attics, featuring two 20th-century casement windows and three additional casements in eyebrow dormers. A 20th-century door is located at the front of a tiled gabled porch. The structure includes jowled posts and straight tension braces set within close studding. The axial beams are chamfered and made from re-used oak, with plain joists of horizontal section supported on pegged clamps. The roof has clasped purlins with straight wind braces, and the upper part is ceiled. Inside, there are two large wood-burning hearths, although the right hearth has been reduced in width. The original newel stair is located in front of the stack. The cottage remains exceptionally unaltered. Historically, an inlet of the sea once extended close to this house, and its name likely comes from a shallow crossing of the river just above the tidal reach.
