Description
Little Oakley War Memorial, dedicated on 21 March 1920, is made of granite and is situated on the green at the corner of Bayview Crescent and Lodge Road.
The memorial features a rough-hewn granite square Celtic cross that rises from a tapering plinth, which is square in shape and set on a square base. The front and rear faces of the plinth are recessed and smooth, displaying incised black-painted inscriptions.
The front face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL SERVING THEIR COUNTRY DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by eight names. The rear face is inscribed with "SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945" and four names, along with the year "1946" and an additional name.
The memorial is positioned on a small square of concrete within a larger grassed area. Two rectangular granite blocks are embedded in the ground near the memorial, one at the front and one at the rear. The rear block details the various locations of the memorial and the dates of relocation, while the front block remains blank.
