Description
The ice house, located 25 yards northwest of Hall Farmhouse, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of brick with sandstone dressings and has a circular plan. There is a short entrance passage on the north side. The circular section descends about ten feet below ground and reaches approximately eight feet to the top of the dome, which features a small circular shoot hole at the apex. The exterior is covered with earth, leaving only the entrance visible, which has stone jambs and a lintel. Inside, there is a door with four raised and fielded panels. This ice house was built to serve Sutton Scarsdale Hall.
