Description
Hall Farm Cottages, also known as 'The Stables' and 'Sutton Hall Stables', is a stable block that has been converted into six cottages, stables, and coach-houses. It dates from the late 18th century and is constructed from coursed squared sandstone, with brick and sandstone ashlar details. The building features hipped slate roofs, which include four stone ridge stacks and four brick ridge stacks, and it is two storeys high.
The main elevation consists of seven bays, highlighted by a broad gabled centre bay that has a pedimented gable. There is a carriage arch with rusticated jambs and stone voussoirs, flanked by three 2-light windows on each side, which have chamfered mullions and projecting voussoirs. Above, there are six later windows fitted with wooden casements. The south elevation has eight bays with irregularly placed casement windows, while the west elevation showcases various 2-light mullioned windows. The north elevation displays irregular fenestration, primarily featuring sash windows.
Inside, the courtyard is cobbled, and the internal elevations are irregular, with some 2-light mullion windows. The west elevation includes three segmental arched carriage entrances with double doors, and the majority of the west wall is made of brick. This building was originally constructed as the stable block for Sutton Scarsdale Hall.
