Description

Butts House is a house dating from the late 17th century, with additions from the mid 18th century and alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble Coal Measures Sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings. The south elevation has a roughcast finish at the east end. The building has coped gables with moulded kneelers, one ashlar gable stack, and one ashlar ridge stack. The roof is covered with stone slates, Welsh slates, and plain tiles.

The house has an L-plan layout, originally a three-bay cottage, with an added bay at right angles to the south end. The west elevation is one-and-a-half storeys high and consists of three bays. The north end has a 2-light flush mullioned window, with one fixed light and one sash window, both featuring glazing bars. Above this window is a square blocked opening with a flush surround. To the south, there is a square fixed-light 4-pane window in a flush surround and a tripartite window with a central sliding sash, all with glazing bars. The first floor has a fixed light window in the centre, also with glazing bars, and above it is a 2-light flat-roofed dormer with a 19th-century frame.

At the south end, the west bay features a 3-light chamfered mullioned window within a moulded surround, above which is a tall 19th-century tripartite casement window. The entrance has a plain door with a massive stone lintel. The added east bay includes a mid-18th-century three-light flush-mullioned window above a tall 4-pane sash.
