Description

Butts Grange is a house built in the mid-18th century, with a significant double-pile addition from the mid-19th century. The building features ashlar and coursed squared rubble made from Coal Measures Sandstone. The south range has coped gables and moulded kneelers, an ashlar ridge stack, and a slated roof that is laid to diminishing courses. The north range has two pitched roofs, each with ashlar end stacks at the north end, one of which is now rendered, and is covered with plain tiles.

The south elevation of the south range has three storeys and two bays, featuring stacked two-light flush-mullioned windows on the first and second floors. Each window has casements with a single horizontal glazing bar. At the west end, there is a four-panelled door with a tripartite rectangular overlight, all within a moulded stone surround. To the east of the doorway, there is a ground-floor four-paned sash window in a flush surround. The east range of the north elevation has two storeys and three bays, with stacked glazing bar sash windows set in flush surrounds. The ground floor sashes have four panes by four panes, while the first-floor sashes have four panes by three panes. The doorway at the north end features a six-panelled door with a rectangular overlight that incorporates Gothick glazing bars, all within a flush ashlar surround. The west elevation includes a basement and a single-storey pitched-roofed extension on the north range, which has two tall four by four pane sash windows on the west elevation.
