Description

Woodthorpe Grange Cottage is a house that is disused and derelict as of June 1992. It dates from the 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century and late 18th century. The structure is cruck-framed and box-framed, with outer walls replaced by sandstone rubble and ashlar dressings. It has a corrugated asbestos roof and is designed in an L-plan, with two storeys.

The south wall features a gabled cross-wing on the left, which has two windows of two lights with flat-faced mullions on each floor. The main wall on the right consists of two bays, with a plain stone window surround at the right, also featuring a flat-faced mullion, and first-floor windows with stone surrounds. The left bay includes a doorway with a quoined surround. The left-hand return wall of the cross-wing has a ground-floor three-light window with flat-faced mullions, a window to the left with a stone surround, and a first-floor window with a stone surround, although its mullions have been removed. The east gable of the house has a ground-floor window with plain reveals and a first-floor window of two lights with a flat-faced mullion. Part of the rear wallplate is visible.

Inside, a cruck truss remains, dividing the north-south cross-wing into two unequal bays. Two western posts indicate that the east-west range was timber-framed. The front door opens into a lobby that features back-to-back hearths, with a shouldered stone fireplace facing into the west room.
