Description
Ware Cottage is a house dating from around 1600 that has undergone alterations. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and cobbles, which have replaced the original timber and clay, and features a roof of corrugated iron instead of thatch. The building is one storey with a loft. The north wall has openings with plain stone surrounds, including three windows, the right-hand one having part of its surround removed and all currently unglazed. There are doors to the right and to the right of the first window. The west gable has an attic window with a plain stone surround, while the east gable features a blocked chamfered window on the ground floor and a two-light chamfered mullioned attic window. The south wall, mainly made of cobble, has three windows with plain reveals. At the far left, beyond the right-hand reveal of a door, the wall has collapsed.
Inside, there are at least two cruck trusses rising to tie beam level from the front wall. The left-hand end of the house is divided into a buttery and pantry, with paired chamfered timber doorways. Nailed to the post between these rooms is a plaque inscribed '1597'. The wall separating the two rooms consists of large timber panels with wattle-and-daub infill. The parlour features a moulded stone fireplace typical of the late 17th century, with a shaped lintel. The other two rooms are separated by a wall with back-to-back plain stone fireplaces. Part of the soffit of the rear wallplate is visible, showing mortises for timber studs that have since been removed. The house was unoccupied at the time of the survey in March 1984 and was in a semi-derelict condition.
