Description
Cockerham Hall is a house, probably dating from the early 17th century, with remnants of late medieval timber framing and 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of sandstone and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys with an attic and a main range made of squared rubble, consisting of two bays with windows that have plain reveals. The door, located between the bays, also has plain reveals. There is a chimney on the left-hand gable and another to the left of the door.
On the east side, there is a cross-wing made of squared sandstone blocks. The main part of its facade has one bay with paired windows set within a plain stone surround, separated by a square mullion. Attached to its left-hand (west) return wall is a lean-to stair outshut, which features a two-light mullioned window with an outer chamfer, an inner hollow chamfer, and a hood. Above this window is a stair window, and the left-hand return wall of the outshut also has a two-light mullioned window. A chimney is located on the front gable of the cross-wing.
Inside, the east room of the main range reveals fragments of exposed timber framing in its rear wall. Two studs have a later timber doorway set between them, and a corner post that abuts the cross-wing is cut to receive two doorheads at right angles to each other. A chamfered stone doorway with a Tudor-arched head leads into the cross-wing, and a second similar doorway has been uncovered within the stair outshut. In the first-floor bedroom and attic above the room with exposed timber framing, there is a tie beam above floor level and a king post of narrow section, which may have once formed part of an open truss of a timber-framed hall. The building will be described by Watson, R.C. & McClintock, M.E., in the Over Wyre Historical Journal, 1984-86 (forthcoming).
