Description

Crookhey Hall is a country house, dating to 1874 and designed by Waterhouse, now used as a school. It is built of snecked sandstone rubble, with slate roofs. The main north-west facing front is asymmetrical in design. The windows feature ovolo-moulded mullions and are sash windows without glazing bars. A slim, four-storey tower rises behind a porte-cochère, with a chimney to the left of its steep hipped roof. To the left of the tower are three bays, two with attic dormers. Further to the left is a gabled cross-wing with an eight-light, mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, and further mullioned windows above. Another bay extends further to the left, and at the far left is a gabled bay that is jettied forwards at first-floor level, supported by stone corbels. A circular turret with a conical roof is situated on the left-hand return wall. To the right of the entrance and tower is a gabled projection featuring a central buttress that incorporates a first-floor oriel and is surmounted by a tall, multi-shafted chimney. The porte-cochère has moulded elliptical arches, corner turrets with finials, angle buttresses, and two intersecting pitched roofs. Inside the porte-cochère are timber ribs for a skeleton vault. The interior features an entrance hall with a first-floor gallery having a timber front and coving. The open timber roof has arch-braced collars and is partly glazed with painted glass. A fireplace with a timber surround and overmantel, displaying Gothic detailing and ornament incorporating birds, is located in an alcove; the house was originally built for Colonel Bird. Other original fireplaces remain throughout the house.
