Description
Egstow Hall is a house built in 1671, with minor restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, featuring large gritstone quoins and sandstone dressings. The building has continuous moulded stringcourses at the first and second storeys, and the slate roofs have stone ridges, with moulded stone copings and kneelers at the gables. There are stone gable end and ridge stacks. The house has two bays and is designed in a T plan, with two storeys plus attics.
The east side features a chamfered quoired doorcase with two lintels, the upper one adorned with a fleur de lys type pattern on a raised keystone. On the west side, there is a 4-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, with a similar window in an advanced cross-wing to the west. Above these, there are two additional similar windows. A large stone plaque over the door is inscribed 'Built by Archelaus Brailsford June ... Anno Dom 1671'. In the western gable, there is a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window with a stringcourse above, and another plaque inscribed 'MJH 1969'. The west elevation shows the outline in masonry of a former two-storey porch, with a recessed and chamfered mullion window flanked by hoods. There is also a gabled stair turret at the rear.
Inside, the hall features a newel staircase with original oak boards from the first floor upwards, a segmental arched doorcase on the ground floor, and a large double corbelled fireplace with a decorated lintel in the dining room, along with a smaller similar fireplace in the kitchen.
