Description

This is a milepost from the early 19th century located on the west side of Derby Road in Wingerworth. It is made of triangular cast iron and features a sloping triangular upper face. The back of the post extends upwards to support an inscription and ends in a segmental arched head. The inscription on the front states 'TOWNSHIP OF TUPTON', and the manufacturer is noted as 'J.HAYWOOD, JNR, DERBY' on the sloping upper face. The south face of the milepost indicates distances to Chesterfield (3 miles), Dronfield (8 miles), and Sheffield (15 miles). The north face includes an obscured distance to Clay Cross and states Derby is 20 miles away.
