Description

The mile post located 14 metres north of Quarry Farmhouse in Higham is an early 19th-century cast iron structure. It features a triangular sectioned base with a moulded front angle and a flat back that has a segmental head, curving forward to create a horizontal panel below. The north side of the post is inscribed with 'DERBY/16 MILES', while the south side bears the inscriptions 'CLAY CROSS/2 MILES, CHESTERFIELD/7 MILES, DRONFIELD/13 MILES, SHEFFIELD/19 MILES'. The back of the post is inscribed with 'TOWNSHIP OF HIGHAM', and the front panel reads 'J HAYWOOD JNR/PHOENIX FOUNDRY/DERBY'.
