Description

Bull Farmhouse in Higham is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in 1672, and further changes in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with gritstone dressings and quoins on the projecting bay. The roof is covered with concrete tiles from the 20th century. There is a stone stack near the south gable and a brick quoined stack on the north gable, both topped with diamond-set stone pots.

The building has two storeys and features irregular fenestration, with an advanced bay to the north. There are four 20th-century casements set in early 19th-century flush surrounds, along with a 20th-century fixed pane window in the northern advanced bay. A 20th-century door is located to the south of this bay. Above, there are three 2-light flush mullion windows with 20th-century casements; the central window is from the 20th century, while the others are from the 18th century. In the northern bay, there is a similar window to the one below it, and above this, a stone plaque is inscribed with 'PFF 1672'.

Inside, the farmhouse features two large late medieval cruck trusses. The southern truss is a closed cruck truss, with the lower part filled by a stud partition. The northern truss has an arched braced base cruck with a steeply canted tie, and the principals start above the tie. Both the tie and braces are moulded, and the principals are stop-chamfered. Additionally, there is a deeply moulded bressumer to the north and an arch in the beam indicating the site of a former doorway.
