Description

Wyck Cottage is a house dating back to the 17th century, with remnants of earlier construction and 20th-century alterations. It is built of stone rubble and incorporates the remains of a cruck frame. The house is two storeys high. The westernmost section is a gabled wing with two ground-floor windows featuring plain reveals, and a matching window on the first floor. Straight joints on either side of this wing suggest rebuilding in stages, potentially using stone to replace timber framing. A single-storey, 20th-century range, incorporating a garage and doorway, is located to the left of the wing. A gable projecting from the east wall of the wing hints that the 20th-century range may occupy the footprint of a previous structure. A unique window in the west wall of the wing features three small, chamfered lights carved from a single piece of stone. To the right of this window are two further windows with keyed lintels, the right-hand one situated within a blocked doorway. A chimney is present on the rear wall of the wing. Inside, the ground-floor rooms of the wing reveal exposed ceiling joists. The joists in the rear room are chamfered, with run-out stops, and contain a 17th-century stone fireplace with a canted head. On the first floor, a portion of a cruck truss is visible within the central partition wall, showing two of the blades, part of the collar, and one spur.
