Description
The Wharfinger's House and Office, located at Buxworth Canal Basin, is a former wharfinger's house now used as a residence. It was built around 1800 by B. Outram and is constructed from coursed, squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and a slate roof. The building features a central stone ridge stack and stands two storeys tall.
On the south elevation, there is a doorcase with flush jambs and a moulded hood to the west, leading to a 20th-century panelled door. To the east, there is a casement window with a flush surround and a projecting sill, with two similar windows above it. Further east, next to the door, is another similar window, with a single similar window above it. The east gable wall has two two-light flush mullion windows and a single window, which together form a five-light window. There is an additional single window on the north side.
The building is listed for its historical significance as part of the Peak Forest Canal, and it served as an office for checking the tonnage passing through the gauging lock. It is situated by Buxworth Canal Basin, which is a Scheduled Site.
