Description
The Church of St James is a church built around 1874, designed by architect J Lowe. It is constructed from gritstone rubble with quoins and features ashlar gritstone dressings. The slate roof is adorned with fish-scale banding and a terracotta ridge, while the gables are stone-coped with kneelers. A coped bellcote is located at the west end. The building is a single cell with a polygonal apse at the east. There are north and south vestries that function as transepts on the exterior.
On the south elevation, there are three pairs of twin lancet windows with leaded lights, each supported by a buttress on the west side. The west side features a glazed wooden gabled porch decorated with cusped details and cusped windows on the sides. The east vestry includes two-light flush mullion windows with arched lights, while the polygonal apse has lancet windows on the sides and an east window with geometric tracery. The north elevation closely resembles the south but lacks the porch.
Inside, the church contains contemporary pews, a font, and other fittings, along with a scissor truss roof. The central south window features abstract stained glass designed in 1962 by T Cocke.
