Description
The Peak Forest Canal Horse Tunnel on the Buxworth Arm is an aqueduct and horse tunnel that carries the canal to Buxworth Basin, previously known as Bugsworth. It was likely constructed between 1794 and 1801, with some later alterations. The engineers responsible for its design were Benjamin Outram and Thomas Brown. The structure is made of dressed stone and features a segmental arch with rock-faced voussoirs. The north elevation has concave retaining walls with parapets made of snecked masonry, while the south elevation has been lost. The north side also includes rock-faced bands and rounded coping, along with rock-faced, squared terminating piers. Notably, the cobbled towpath remains intact.
