Description

The Ockbrook and Borrowash War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled and dedicated in 1922, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Hopton Wood limestone and is square in plan.

The memorial features an obelisk located on the west side of Victoria Avenue, positioned between the villages of Ockbrook to the north and Borrowash to the south. It consists of a two-stepped base that supports a rectangular plinth with a moulded capstone. The obelisk itself tapers in square section to a pyramidal top. On the north-west face of the obelisk, the inscription reads 'In Memoriam / 1914 - 1918 / 1935 - 1945'. The top step of the base on the same side carries the First World War dedication, which states, 'REMEMBER WITH THANKSGIVING THE TRUE AND / FAITHFUL MEN, WHO IN THE YEARS OF WAR WENT / FORTH FROM THIS PARISH FOR GOD AND RIGHT; THE / NAMES OF THOSE WHO RETURNED NOT AGAIN ARE / HERE INSCRIBED TO BE HONOURED FOR EVERMORE.' The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on all four sides of the plinth, while the names of those who perished in the Second World War are recorded on the base.

The sunken paved area surrounding the memorial, including the chain link fence with concrete fence posts, is not included in the listing.
