Description
The Hemington War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921, with an additional name added after the Second World War. It is made of Hopton Wood stone and is located on the village green at the junction of Church Lane, Hemington Hill, and Main Street.
The memorial features a plain cross mounted on a three-stepped plinth, which sits on a base. An inscription in relief on the shaft of the cross reads: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO PAID THE PRICE 1914/1918." The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the top two steps, while the name of the soldier who fell in the Second World War is on the bottom step. The memorial is set on a mound of roughly hewn rock, referred to as a ‘grotto’ in the Long Eaton Advertiser. It is enclosed by a fence made of oak corner posts and iron palisades, with a gate on one side.
