Description
Peggs Farmhouse and its attached outbuildings are located on Main Street in Hemington. The farmhouse features a late 16th-century rear wing, with a front wing added around 1869, creating a T-plan layout.
The rear wing is constructed with timber framing and diagonal bracing, with later brick infill on the north side. The south side was rebuilt in brick during the 19th century. It has a thatched roof with a small rebuilt brick chimney positioned to the left of center and brick gable copings. The building is one and a half storeys tall, consisting of two original bays and brick half bays at the far end. The windows are irregular two- and three-light horizontal sashes, all replaced in the 20th century, with those on the upper storey featuring thatch eyebrows. There is an off-centre stable-type door, also from the 20th century. Attached to the far end of the rear wing are outbuildings, primarily made of brick, but with some late 17th-century timber framing in the near bay, all covered with corrugated asbestos roofs.
The front wing is built of red brick and has a plain tile roof with a brick chimney on the right. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The windows are four-pane sashes with white painted stone sills and lintels. The central entrance features a four-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above. The doorcase, likely from the 20th century, includes a cornice and a short diapered frieze that does not fully span the width between the two Ionic columns. There is also a later 19th-century canted bay window on the left side.
Inside the rear wing, there is a notable stop-chamfered spine beam and joists in the left bay, altered floor joists in the right bay, and an altered central chimney with remnants of a stone oven projecting to the rear. The trusses have tie beams that create a hammer-beam effect. The front wing features a central staircase with ornamental shaped and pierced splat balusters.
