Description

20-24 Cromford Hill consists of three originally four cottages built in the early 19th century, as indicated on the 1841 Tithe Map, with a later 19th-century extension on the right. The cottages are constructed from coursed rubble and feature Welsh slate roofs. They are two storeys high and have three red and black brick ridge stacks.

No. 20, which includes the later extension identifiable by a vertical masonry joint, has a three-window range overall and a door leading to the extension. The ground-floor windows are positioned under large rectangular lintels, and there are four symmetrically placed sash windows on the right end wall.

No. 22 is a double-fronted symmetrical two-window range with a raised panel double door. No. 24 has a blocked door to the right. Nos 20 and 24 feature horned sashes, while No. 22 has hornless sashes. There are small extensions at the rear of the cottages.

Although this row is not part of the original Arkwright houses development, it significantly contributes to the townscape, located opposite the entrance to North Street.
