Description
Spalden's Almshouses were founded in 1710 and built shortly afterwards. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings and has been partially restored. It features plain stone eaves and a hipped roof covered with old tiles. The building is two storeys high and is arranged around three sides of a courtyard. It has plain, two-light mullioned windows that include early 19th-century glazing bars throughout. The doors are ledged and set in stone-faced surrounds with pseudo-quoin detailing and a plinth. A moulded cornice runs along the first floor and forms a hood, with mutules positioned above the doors. There is a modern one-storey brick addition at the centre of the rear elevation. The listed buildings in School Lane form a group with No. 69 Church Street and the School Lane section of the churchyard walls belonging to the parish church of St Oswald.
