Description
Pegg's Almshouses were founded in 1669 and built shortly after. The building is made of ashlar and consists of a single-storey range positioned at right angles to the street. It features coupled two-light mullioned windows throughout and ledged doors set in chamfered four-centred arches. The stone gabled ends are notable, with the side facing the street displaying a large armorial and inscribed panels that contain lengthy Latin inscriptions. There are modern or restored clustered stone stacks. Opposite the almshouses is a detached range of outbuildings, including latrines, built in 1848 in a similar style, and the structure has old tiles. Pegg's Almshouses, along with Nos 38, 40, and 72, Owlfield's Almshouses, The Mansion, the Summerhouse, and the cobbled pavements, form a group with the parish Church of St Oswald and the churchyard gate piers, gates, and walls.
