Description
The Grey House is a large and impressive house built between 1760 and 1770. It is constructed of freestone and stands three storeys tall, featuring three bays with three-light angular bays on each side. The central lights are highlighted by an architrave on the second storey, with pediments on the lower storey. The house has a large Roman Doric cornice hood porch with a dentilled pediment, a segmental-headed door, and pilastered side-lights, along with steps leading up to the entrance.
On the second storey of the central bay, there is a Venetian window, with a semi-circular three-light window above it, and a stone corbelled cornice. The parapet includes inset balustrades and pediments in the central bay. Inside, the cellars feature brick barrel vaulting and an old mullioned window with diamond quarries and glass, which is now below street level and likely a remnant of an earlier house. The interior also contains powder closets and doors, as well as a 19th-century elaborate plaster ceiling. The Grey House is part of a significant group that includes Nos 43 to 61 (odd), the Old Grammar School, and the pavement in front of the Old Grammar School.
