Description
The Mansion is a large house built around 1685, with significant alterations and additions dating from around 1765 to 1784. It is constructed of red brick with bands at the first and second floor sill heights. The building has a corbelled plaster cornice and a parapet with inset balustrades, topped by an open pediment over the central bay. The roof is not visible. The main facade is of three bays, with two windows on each side and a Venetian window in the centre, featuring a semi-circular tripartite window above. A single-windowed three-storey portion of the earlier facade remains to the west. The garden front features side gables and a central, raised Doric gabled porch leading to a domed, octagonal Music Room.
To the north-east of the main facade, only the wall of the former coach house/stable remains, exhibiting arched features and contributing to the overall character of the site.
Inside, an elegant staircase has laced iron balusters and a balcony supported on marble pillars of Ionic order. The house features fireplaces, doors, and some panelling with bolection moulding. The plaster ceilings include Rococo motifs in the Music Room. The Mansion was the home of Dr Taylor from 1710 to 1788, and was frequently visited by Dr Johnson between 1737 and 1784.
The house is part of a group that includes Nos 38, 40 and 72, Pegg's and Owlfield's Almshouses, a summerhouse, cobbled pavements, the parish Church of St Oswald, and the churchyard gate piers, gates and walls.
