Description
The Old Grammar School, founded by Queen Elizabeth in 1585, is a Grade I listed building located on Church Street. It is constructed of ashlar and features two storeys with attics. The building has a large gable on each side and four smaller gables in the center, all topped with obelisk finials. The upper windows are three-light mullioned windows with arched heads, while the lower level has an eight-light trans-mullioned window, with ten-light windows on the sides. There are two entrances with four-centred arches and enriched spandrels, flanked by fluted pedestal pilasters that support slight entablatures; the right-hand entrance has been restored. A moulded hood with an armorial panel is located above the left-hand entrance, which is accessed by steps. The Old Grammar School, along with Nos 43 to 61 (odd) and the pavement in front, forms a group of significant historical importance.
