Description
The Summer House in the grounds of Mansion House is a Grade II* listed building from the mid-18th century. It features a Roman Doric style with a freestone facade set against a brick body. This structure resembles a miniature temple, consisting of three open arched bays that are divided by pilasters with moulded caps, which support a dentilled pediment. The Summer House was frequently used by Dr. Johnson, as noted in Boswell's writings.
This building is part of a group that includes Nos 38, 40, and 72, Pegg's Almshouses, Owlfield's Almshouses, The Mansion, the Summer House itself, and the cobbled pavements, all of which are associated with the parish Church of St Oswald and its churchyard gate piers, gates, and walls.
