Description

The Matlock Bath War Memorial, built in 1921, features a marble sculpture by the Italian company Fedele Andreani and Fratelli, with the rest of the memorial crafted by masons James Beresford & Sons of Belper.

The memorial has a square plan and is made from grey Cornish granite and white Italian Carrara marble. It includes a Carrara marble sculpture of a soldier and sailor standing on a cairn, holding a flowing Union Flag. This sculpture is set on a granite pedestal with a moulded and dentilled cornice and corner pilasters, resting on a granite plinth adorned with a laurel wreath in relief, all atop a stepped ashlar base. The entire structure is encircled by a low circular kerb.

Inscriptions on the memorial are in lead lettering. The north face features the words "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD" on the frieze, followed by "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF MATLOCK BATH WHO GAVE THEIR ALL IN THE GREAT WAR OF NATIONS 1914-1919," with names listed below. At the lower edge of the north face pedestal, it reads "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The west face bears the inscription "DUTY NOBLY DONE, HONOUR BRAVELY WON, LOYAL HEARTS NOW REST, BY GOD'S PEACE NOW BLEST." A later addition on the south face of the pedestal states "ALSO IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945," with names listed below. The original inscription at the foot of the south face reads "ERECTED BY VOLUNTARY SUBSCRIPTION BY THE INHABITANTS OF MATLOCK BATH." The east face of the pedestal includes the words "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." Finally, the south face of the plinth is marked "BERESFORD, BELPER."
