Description
The Haworth War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1923 by Barber and Heseltine of Pontefract. It is constructed from ashlar granite, with bronze and lead lettering.
The memorial is square in plan and takes the form of an obelisk topped with a pyramidal cap and featuring tapering sides. It has a splayed base raised on a plinth, which stands on a two-stepped base. On the main (north-east) elevation of the obelisk, a bronze sword is attached, with a bronze wreath placed below it. A frieze carved in relief encircles the obelisk, listing the names of four First World War campaigns in a clockwise direction from the front: FRANCE, GALLIPOLI, MESOPOTAMIA, and FLANDERS.
The pedestal of the memorial features a cornice with simple mouldings and a gently sloping upper surface, along with angled corners. The recessed corners are adorned with capped and inverted scroll brackets that have carved pendent garlands on their sides. The fascia of the pedestal displays a carved intaglio inscription that reads: OUR GLORIOUS DEAD. Additionally, a raised dedication panel on the front of the pedestal contains inset lettering that states: IN LOVING AND GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE MEN OF HAWORTH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ THAT WE MIGHT LIVE/ 1914 – 1918. The names of the 100 men who died are inscribed in inset metal lettering on the remaining three sides of the pedestal, which is finished with a moulded plinth.
