Description
Nos 7 and 8 on Fern Street are two dwellings that were originally a single house built in the late 17th century and converted in the 18th century. The building is constructed from coursed, dressed millstone grit and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and is divided into two bays.
On the south elevation, each dwelling has a door to the right and a 4-light, flat-faced mullion window to the left. The first floor has a 3-light window to the left and a 4-light window to the right, with a datestone inscribed 'TMH BOUGHT ANNO DNI 1724' between them. The north elevation shows quoins on the left end and double-chamfered mullion windows, although most of the mullions have been replaced. There is a half-glazed boarded door in a flush stone surround with interrupted jambs to the left, along with a blocked doorway and a later window to the right. The second and third bays contain 4-light and 2-light windows above.
The east elevation features a central half-glazed door set in a quoined, chamfered, Tudor-arch doorway with a deep lintel and sunk spandrels. There are later inserted doors and windows on the first floor, along with remnants of three 2-light double-chamfered windows. A stone gutter spout is also present.
