Description

Two houses with shops, dating from the mid-19th century. They are constructed of ashlar millstone grit, with a stone slate roof. The buildings are three storeys high, each featuring two windows on the first floor. Each property has a plinth. Number 69 has two shops to the front. A central C20 glazed door has a chamfered, segment-headed surround and overlight, with tall shop windows set in chamfered surrounds either side. The door and window jambs project forwards, resting on plinth blocks. Number 71 has steps leading to a five-panel door, with a segment-headed overlight and chamfered surround. To the left is a large two-light shop window. Again, the door and window jambs project forwards, supported by plinth blocks. The first floor windows are segment-headed, with eared and shouldered architraves. The second floor has round-arched windows with moulded archivolts, prominent keyblocks, and imposts. A moulded string course runs along the building. There’s a cornice, and corniced stacks are located at the left end of each house. The buildings are of group value.
