Description

The Wardle War Memorial is a war memorial built in the early 1920s. It is made from polished and rubbed granite and features a square base with a round column. The memorial consists of a Doric column made of polished grey marble, which is topped with a stylised smoothed granite Celtic cross. This column is set on a polished grey granite pedestal that has moulded upper corners and a shouldered base, raised on a square three-stepped plinth.

The front panel of the pedestal is inscribed with the words: "ERECTED / TO THE MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF WARDLE / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR / LIVES FOR US IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919." The rear panel contains the inscription: "SONS OF THIS PLACE LET THIS / OF YOU BE SAID / THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY / OF YOUR DEAD / THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT / YOU WHO LIVE MAY REAP / A RICHER HARVEST ERE YOU / FALL ASLEEP." The two side panels list the eighty-seven names of those who fell in the First World War.

Additionally, a secondary dedication stone has been added to the base of the pedestal, which reads: "AND IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 45," and lists the nineteen names of those who fell in the Second World War. Below this, on the plinth, there is another stone that states: "TO ALL THOSE / WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE / OF / THEIR COUNTRY." The plinth is set on a square base made of tamped pea-gravel, surrounded by concrete edging stones.
