Description

Sitch Farmhouse is a house and attached stable, originally a house, cottage, and stable, dating from the late 18th century with 19th-century alterations and additions. It is built of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, now roughcast, featuring plain gables, ridge and gable brick stacks, and a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and a three-window range, with a two-bay house in the center, a cottage at the southeast end (right), and a stable at the northwest end (left). The house has a doorway flanked by stacked two-light flush-mullioned windows with casement frames and horizontal glazing bars, although the surrounds to the door and window openings are generally obscured by roughcast. The cottage has a plain doorway on the northwest side and stacked two-light flush-mullioned windows on the southeast side. The stable features a central doorway and a single square window with a hopper vent, with plain planked doors throughout. At the northwest end, there is a low stone slated lean-to kennel and steps leading to a first-floor gable doorway with a plank door. The rear elevation of the house includes a single bay two-storey scullery/dairy that runs parallel to the main range. Inside, there are exposed spine beams with plain chamfer stops and exposed joists in the southeast bay of the house. The main hearth of the house has a jowelled surround, while the former cottage hearth has a plain surround, both featuring late 19th-century ranges. There is an early 20th-century tiled hearth in the northwest end bay of the house, and the roof has side purlins. The stalls in the stable are still intact.
