Description
No. 42 St Mary's Gate is a mid-18th century building that was formerly listed as the offices of the Scarsdale Brewery Company. It is constructed of red brick, featuring stone bands between the floors and at the eaves, with quoins and a moulded stone eaves cornice. The building has a stone slab roof with end chimneys and stands three storeys tall. It has five windows, which are sashes with glazing bars set in boxed frames, each adorned with keystones. The central door is framed by a moulded architrave, frieze, and cornice, and features a six-panelled door with raised and fielded panels along with a plain rectangular fanlight. Inside, there are two rooms with original panelling and a staircase with turned balusters. The building occupies an important focal position at the junction of St Mary's Gate and Vicar Lane.
