Description
The Church of St Mary and All Saints is a large medieval church constructed from ashlar stone. It features a nave, aisles, north and south transepts, and a chancel that is flanked by four chapels, which were originally Guild Chapels. The church has a crossing tower topped by a 228-foot high spire made of timber and clad with herringbone lead plates. The spire is notably twisted and leans several feet in three different directions due to warping.
Architectural elements of the church display Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular styles, although the north transept was rebuilt in 1769 and the church underwent restoration by Gilbert Scott in 1843. A 18th-century Schnetzer organ was destroyed by fire. The south transept features a screen dating from around 1500, while the Holy Cross Chapel in the north transept dates from around 1503, and St Katherine's Chapel contains part of the original rood screen from around 1475.
Inside, there are a pair of brass chandeliers from 1760, a Norman font, and a Jacobean pulpit. The church also houses monuments to the Foljambe family from the 16th and early 17th centuries, as well as 18th-century tablets and monuments. Features from the 19th century include a High Altar reredos from 1898 by Temple Moore and stained glass by Warrington, Hardman, and Sir Ninian Comper.
