Description

The Former Williams and Glyn's Bank and Bank Chambers, located at Nos 1 and 3 Cavendish Street, was built around 1907 and designed by architect W Cecil Jackson. This Edwardian Baroque building is semi-circular and sits at the point where Cavendish Street meets Stephenson Place. It features a high plinth that contains a basement, and the two-storey facade is set back behind a grand arrangement of engaged Ionic columns, topped with an architrave, frieze, and a modillion cornice. The roof is not visible due to a parapet with an open balustrade.

The rear of the building has three bays on both streets, each with rusticated stone facades and a plain blocking course that continues with the open balustrade to the south. There are a total of seventeen windows, all with moulded stone architraves and corbelled sills; the ground floor windows are distinguished by triple keystones. At the centre of the curved facade, there is a door with a plain round arched fanlight and a segmental pediment supported by consoles. Above the door, a stone plaque displays arms, flanked by reversed eagles. The building also includes Nos 2 and 4 Stephenson Place.
