Description

No 2 St Mary's Gate is an early 17th-century building with a facade that is rendered and painted white. It stands two storeys tall and features two windows with three-light sashes; the outer lights have glazing bars, and the ground floor windows have moulded frames and cornices. The entrance door, dated 1898, is set in a moulded architrave with a wide Tudor arch, and above it is a panel decorated with plaster fruit and leaves, flanked by scrolls, topped with a broken pediment. At the rear, there is a wide segmental arch with pilasters and a later door set within the arch.

To the east, there is a two-storey cross wing that is angled along the street line of Station Back Lane, topped with a stone slab roof and featuring off-centre and end chimneys. This wing also has two windows, placed irregularly, which are generally sashes with late 19th-century glazing.

Inside, the building contains several panelled rooms, including one from the early 17th century in the east wing and another from the late 17th or early 18th century to the north of the entrance, featuring bolection moulding. The central first-floor room boasts an ornamental plaster ceiling from the late 16th or early 17th century. The entrance hall is adorned with egg and dart moulding on the frieze. A late 17th or early 18th-century staircase features a continuous string, handrail, and turned balusters, with alternate balusters twisted. The roof is a butt purlin type with a mix of straight and arched braces, collars, and traces of framed partitions. The building is listed as Grade II* for its significant interior features.
