Description

The lamp post near the south porch of St Mary's Church was erected in 1824 and is notable for being the first gas street lamp in Chesterfield. Originally, it was located at the corner of the Market Place and was supplied with gas from a cellar beneath the former Cathedral Vaults. The lamp post is made of cast iron and features a square chamfered plinth. From this base rises a fluted column with a bulbous base that is adorned with leaf mouldings. The lamp is topped with a finial.
