Description

9 Beetwell Street is a late 16th century to early 17th century building with later additions and alterations. It is recorded as a gift from John Williamson to the Parish Church in 1479. The facade is now covered in roughcast render, and it has a tiled roof with an off-centre chimney. The building is two storeys high with a cellar and is approximately four bays wide, featuring two windows and an additional small modern window on the first floor. The ground floor includes a western window and a six-panelled door with a small rectangular fanlight and architrave. To the east, there is a 19th-century shop front with panelled pilasters and large reeded consoles. All house windows are unbarred sashes set in boxed frames.

A large eastern carriageway arch is present under the building, revealing timber framing in the wall beneath. The interior features exposed ceiling beams and panelling typical of the 16th and early 17th centuries, with carved panels above two doors. There are built-in 18th-century cupboards with arches, fluted columns, and fluted keystones, as well as a late 16th or 17th-century Derbyshire stone fireplace.

The rear gable and a rear wing, of which the southern section has been demolished, are also part of the structure. The roof has through purlins that are trenched into the back of the blade, with collar, tie beams, and ridge. The roof comprises three bays of unequal length, and a 17th-century window with leaded quarrels remains in the gable end wall, though it is now covered externally by a neighbouring 18th-century house. The rear area is flagged.

This property is designated as grade II* due to its significant interior and historical interest.
