Description
This is a mid-19th century milepost located to the west of the junction of Chesterfield Road and Wood Lane in the parish of Pentrich. It is made of cast iron and has a triangular shape with a dished upper face. The upper face is inscribed with 'PARISH OF PENTRICH J HAYWOOD JNR'. The north-east face indicates 'DERBY 11 MILES', while the south-west face lists distances to various locations: 'CLAY CROSS 7 MILES, CHESTERFIELD 12 MILES, DRONFIELD 18 MILES, SHEFFIELD 24 MILES'. This milepost marks the route of the former direct turnpike road between Derby and Sheffield, as shown on Burdett's map of Derbyshire from 1862-1867.
