Description
The canal tunnel and embankment, located under the road to the west of the car park for the Excavator Public House, were constructed in 1792 by William Jessop and Benjamin Outram as part of the Cromford Canal. The structure is made of coursed squared stone and features a tunnel that is approximately 30 yards long, with a high embankment above and on the sides. The entrances are segmental arched, and there is a flagged tow path within the barrel vaulted tunnel. The embankment has round coping at the top and curves outward to either side, flaring out at the base.
